Listen to ALL of your “selves”
Today I am reminded, in a not altogether pleasant way, that our dimensions of wellness are interdependent. While I find it helpful to identify the six wellness selves within each of us, I do not mean to imply that these selves act independently.
This morning, I woke with tension in my low back, which became painful as I descended the two flights of stairs to walk Chewbarka, AKA, my dog Lila. I sat on the last stair and tried to crack my back, a method that usually resolves the pain. No luck.
By the time we returned to the courtyard, I realized this would not be a regular workday. Even then, I stopped twice to move two helpless, inch-long slugs from the pavement to the grass. They don’t seem to understand that most human eyes do not detect their presence prior to crushing them beneath big human feet.
Once home, I tried to crack my back in earnest, but again, nothing moved, and the pain extended to an inability to open the window over my desk. OK, step one, feed the dog, step two, take Ibuprophen, step three lie on the floor and do back-loosening, pelvic tilts.
Afterward, I fully accepted I could not sit at my desk and work. When my back is testy, sitting is the worst position. [Note: I am currently standing in the kitchen with my computer on the butcher block counter!]
