From Doom to Hope
Kamala Harris helps me dig down deep to find my faith
I know I’m not the only one thinking about this, but most people don’t write, and those that do, write about other things, soooo…..
The first article I published on Medium in 2018 was born in a similar place. I saw hatred all around, filled with a sense of doom, that growing presence I’ve felt deep down since the run-up to the 2016 election.
Yesterday I heard Kamala Harris speak to members of her campaign in what was an acceptance speech. Biden passed the torch to Harris, trusting her to continue the marathon and win the White House in November. I’ve heard her speak before, but this felt different — more grounded, and yet also spirited; more pointed, and yet open-ended, more angry, but also controlled and determined.
The woman I heard speaking yesterday is NOT the same woman I heard when she ran for president in 2020. Not that there was anything wrong with that woman. She had already stacked up a dizzying list of accomplishments and was more than qualified for the office she sought. She was bright and confident, smart, quick-witted, and well-spoken. But 4 years later she has the vice-presidency in her bag of tricks, Biden, an army of democratic leaders, and countless powerful organizations backing her, and she seems to have come into her own, fully.
